Which sector is leading right now?And what happened next, twice.
Hi ~Contact.FirstName~,
On February 28, 2022, the energy sector (XLE) was strong on every measure in the Sunday scan: it beat the S&P 500 over the last 1, 3 and 6 months and sat above its 50-day average. Over the next 63 trading days, XLE returned +26.6% while SPY returned -4.6%. Now March 31, 2025. Energy again read as strong on every measure. Over the next 63 trading days, XLE returned -7.8% while SPY returned +10.7%. Same reading, opposite outcomes. That is the honest limit of any sector scan: it describes what is strong now. It does not tell you what comes next. In our test of 515 month-end leader readings since 1999, the sector beat SPY over the next three months 51.7% of the time, versus 48.7% for any sector-month. So why scan at all?Because the gap between the best and worst sector in a typical year was about 40 percentage points, and last year's leader was the leader again only 3 times in 25 years. Leadership rotates, and a short weekly report keeps you aware of where things stand. Run your scan this Sunday with the checklist from the first email. Examples are hypothetical, hindsight-selected and use real ETF data; past results do not predict future results. Data: Yahoo Finance adjusted closes, checked against Finnhub.
